Ricky Evans believes Fallon Sherrock was the better player when she was eliminated from the World Darts Championship and admits it was just missed doubles that earned him a dramatic victory at Alexandra Palace.
Sherrock, who famously became the first woman to defeat a man at the World Cup during her remarkable run to the third round three years ago, was eliminated in the first round at Alexandra Palace for the second consecutive season.
‘The Queen of the Palace’ shot the higher average against Evans Tuesday night and won the opening set, only for her play partner to hit back and earn a 3-1 win to book a second-round meeting against Joe Cullen.

“I knew it was going to be tough, but I didn’t expect it to be that tough!” Evans told InNewCL Sports. “She is good! People cheer because a lady is playing, but they don’t respect how good she actually is at darts.
“She was the better player in this game! I got away with it and I’m so happy to win – I’m absolutely thrilled. She missed doubles, she missed too many doubles and I took my chance and that’s the story of my career.
“I think the boos were my dad, I think he booed me for being so bad. I’m so happy because now I have nothing to lose because this is the hardest darts game you can ever play.”

Mardle: Sherrock lost his composure on doubles
Sherrock converted just nine of 31 double attempts and InNewCL Sports’ Wayne Mardle believes Sherrock’s lack of composure combined with a lack of precision cost them what could have been a brilliant win.
“Like Ricky [Evans] said he got a little lucky and got away with it,” Mardle said. “The third set kind of changed everything as Fallon wanted five after leaving five and missed darts there again in a doubles. After that it kind of changed.

“From an apparent 2-1 lead to being 2-1 down, Ricky played a little better in the fourth set but he was right, he got away with it. As for Fallon, that’s the best I’ve seen from her in a while. To be fair, she played really well.
“What I thought was flip-flop was that Fallon usually has all the composure and Ricky doesn’t, and it just freaked out. Fallon was the one who missed the double and Ricky was the one who kept it together. He hit 10/21 which is really good no matter who you play against.
“It was Fallon that didn’t hold it together, which is surprising. Fallon at one point looked like she was just going to keep hitting tons, 140s, 137s but Ricky read it right and he got away with it but you need a bit of luck.”

Part: Sherrock won’t be happy until she wins
Although the match was a marked improvement on Sherrock’s performances of late, InNewCL Sports’ John Part believes she won’t be entirely happy until she gets back to winning ways on the biggest stage.
“I thought it was a pretty even competition and I think Ricky did better than normal – he got 48% in doubles, which is really an excellent performance,” said Part. “From a bad start at that speed beating the double is really a good job.
“Fallon, she can be pleased with how she handled the game, but she will certainly go back to the drawing board and work on the doubles and fine tuning.
“That was a good sign for her but she wants the match to win and she won’t be happy at all that she had a lead and didn’t go ahead and win the match, certainly not on the doubles missed.”
