Michael van Gerwen said his performance was “not perfect” as he dismantled Lewy Williams in the shortest time possible at the World Darts Championship
Title favorite Michael van Gerwen claims he’s the man to beat – even in his sleep – as he hit an early milestone at this year’s World Darts Championship.
Three-time world champion Van Gerwen spent less than 20 minutes at the oche in his triumph over Welsh youngster Lewy Williams on Wednesday night at Alexandra Palace.
After dropping his only leg of the game in the first set, Van Gerwen walked the aisles and averaged an incredible 125 in the second set with legs of 13, 12 and 11 darts.
The Dutchman finished the game with an average of 101.84, his over 34th tonne average in darts’ homeland, to send out a warning to his rivals.

“It wasn’t perfect, but I think I played quite well,” said Van Gerwen, the favorite before the tournament.
“I had to work hard for it, such a performance is no coincidence. It gives me great pleasure to be back on this stage, Ally Pally has a special place in my heart.
“It means a lot to me to get such a great response from the crowd.
“I always try to play darts at the highest possible level; I know what I’m capable of.”

The 33-year-old continued: “I want to win this or it will be a disaster for me but I know I’m capable of it and although there’s more pressure on my shoulders – a bigger aim. I believe in this my own chance and I’m looking forward to the next one.
“I fear nobody. Let them fear me. I’m always the man to beat – even in my sleep. Even if I couldn’t win a tournament, my opponents were happiest to beat me – that’s a fact, but I’ve created problems myself for the last 10 years.”

Wayne Mardle says MVG wanted to ‘destroy’ Williams – which he did!
Wayne Mardle says MVG wanted to ‘destroy’ Williams – which he did!
Wayne Mardle said Van Gerwen made a statement to the rest of the pack as he chased after his first Ally Pally crown since 2019.
“Forget average, it was his looks. He wanted to play well to the end. He wanted to demolish Lewy and he did,” said Hawaii 501.
“Michael was flawless in that second set and we might not see three legs put together like this throughout the event. That was so special.
“He was really moving towards the finish line and he was like, ‘I want to register numbers that no one else has and register something that I’m proud of and that others will look at.
“Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen like it when they are talked about and nobody else and that is this achievement. Michael van Gerwen wants to entertain.”

Former Lakeside World Champion Mark Webster was equally impressed with Van Gerwen’s performance, calling it “scorching”.
He said: “I thought he would play well, but not that well. He had blisters didn’t he? Poor Lewy Williams didn’t know what hit him and he couldn’t settle for the draw but that’s what Michael van Gerwen can do to you.
“It seemed like the match was over in the blink of an eye. In the end it was nine legs to one and it’s a real statement. He also has a nice draw with Mensur Suljovic or Mike De Decker next. He sent a real message.
“He’s started out rather slowly and worked his way up in World Cup campaigns in recent years but it looks like he’s in the mood from the start.”
