St Helens will look to defy the odds and claim a win over the Penrith Panthers on Saturday

We’ve got the latest talking points and team news as the St Helens and Penrith Panthers go head-to-head in the World Club Challenge….

The stars are on display

Because the World Club Challenge is played during the preseason, there is often concern that teams may not bring out some of their star players. In this year’s game, however, no one needs to worry about that.

St Helens will field their strongest team minus the injured Joe Batchelor, with Panthers Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai moving in.

Penrith’s defense has been fearsome in recent years and will pose a threat to St Helens, but the English champions have their own star quality.

Jack Welsby, who impressed in the Saints’ win over the St George Illawarra Dragons and faced Luai at the World Cup in November, will need to keep an eye on the Australian team, and Lewis Dodd and Alex Walmsley have also offered tips to cause damage.

Four-time Super League champions versus two-time NRL champions is an exciting contest as the sport can be and these teams won’t want to disappoint.

Sculthorpe: Key plays the “Saints Way”

Paul Sculthorpe knows St Helens will have to do their best to beat Penrith in Saturday’s World Club Challenge.

A two-time winner of the annual showpiece, the great Saints Sculthorpe knows what it takes to come out on top.

The 45-year-old also thinks it’s a “great” time to play against the Australian champions as the sides go head-to-head this weekend at the BlueBet Stadium in Penrith, New South Wales.

Sculthorpe told the PA news agency: “Saints have had a couple of friendlies but it’s a very different ballgame on Saturday.

“I think for Saints to win it they have to do their best. But it’s also a great time to catch Penrith, you have to start fast and face them and piss them off.

“They have a lot of talented players, but so do Saints. Don’t fall into the trap of beating them at what they do, play the Saints way and play some rugby.”

Cleary: The Panthers are ready to go

Penriths Cleary believes his side are ready to take on St Helens.

It will be Cleary’s first World Club Challenge game as none has been played since 2020 and he knows his side will need to show St Helens “respect” to get the job done.

“Obviously a unique situation for us, we haven’t been able to play in one yet [due to Covid]’ said Klary.

“Of course it’s also a big challenge and a team like St Helens deserves our utmost respect.

“They won four competitions in a row, it’s really incredible.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge on Saturday night and it’s a great opportunity for us at the club because we’ve never won one before.”
