The Orlando Magic continues to try to add parts to their franchise that will take them to new heights. They had the first overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, picking PF Paolo Banchero from Duke. Banchero was a dominant athlete for the Blue Devils in his only collegiate season. He and the Magic have won six of their last ten games and are thirteenth in the Eastern Conference. The 20-year-old, who is 1.80 meters tall, still has so much potential ahead of him.

In college it was clear that Bacnhero was different from everyone else. The way he handles the ball for his size and his soft shooting contact are far from the reason he’s not just your average NBA rookie. He grew up with a former NBA talent who helped shape his career.

These are the shots that superstars take.

Young rookie, team 2 down in crunch time, idle shotclock, on the way against the best team in the NBA, reigning DPOY in your face, never mind.

Growing up in Seattle helped make Banchero an elite player

The Seattle Supersonics left Washington when Banchero was five and became the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was fortunate to learn from former Seattle NBA talent who wanted to help Seattle’s still-growing basketball scene.

A native of Seattle, 20-year-old NBA veteran Jamal Crawford said he saw something special at Banchero when he was 14. At the time, Crawford was just finishing his senior season with the Clippers and was loving helping the young Seattle basketball players. He first met Paolo when he was an eighth grader who was 6’1″ and 200 pounds. Crawford had this to say about his first impressions of him.

“Because he was really big, most guys that size rely on their athleticism and being bigger and stronger”… “But I saw the fundamental foundation he had from his parents and training. You could tell he put a lot of time into this game and being tall was an added bonus. I’m like, ‘Whoa, if he makes this game, you’re already ahead of the curve.’ – Jamal Crawford

He joined an Orlando team that had only two players on the team who had played more than five seasons in the NBA. The Magic are a young team and can build on this foundation. The focus is certainly Paolo Banchero.
