One of Argentina’s greatest basketball talents, Leandro Bolmaro, was released from Jazz just yesterday. The player, who joined the Utah camp last summer when he joined Rudy Gobert from Minnesota, will now have to look for a new team.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania was the first to report this Thursday afternoon that the Jazz are getting rid of their guard Leandro Bolmaro, who arrived in Utah in a package alongside the Timberwolves’ Walker Kessler, Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt and Patrick Beverley. Only hours later, the team administration confirmed the move.
The Argentine, 22-year-old was the 23rd pick of the 2020 NBA draft New York Knicks, from a pick originally owned by Jazz but traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves during the same transfer window.
He competed in 35 games in his early days in the NBA, but then mostly spent his rookie year playing for the Iowa Wolves in the G-League, only to be picked up in the Gobert trade that led to it that he became a jazz player.
Check out one of his best performances in the G-League when he dropped 25 points, gained 6 rebounds and gave 5 assists for the Iowa team a year ago:
You could say the same thing happened in this second campaign for Bolmaro as he has only appeared in 14 games so far and hasn’t started a single game. In just 4.9 minutes per match, the youngster was averaging 0.4 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists, even worse than the stats from his rookie year in Minnesota.
The interesting thing about this move is that the Jazz had no real reason to as the player had a good relationship in the dressing room and worked well in training, in contrast to last year’s waivers of players like Stanley Johnson and Jared Butler. With Bolmaro in the roster, the jazz team had an extra spot to fill.
With the Utah camp now having two vacancies on the roster, there could be as many as three if another team signs veteran star Russell Westbrook as there is still time until March 1 when the athlete plays for another franchise in the playoffs would like .
While the club are on their way to rebuilding their team, a common strategy is to leave some squad spots open to give them time to identify new talent and develop potential players they would like to add to the squad.
Not too long ago we included the Argentine in our top 5 players who might be eyeing their return to Europe after this season as Bolmaro was once part of Barcelona’s basketball club in the EuroLeague.

Some of our favorite sports betting sites believe that the Jazz holds only the 22nd best odds (+30,000) to win the NBA trophy this year, combined with odds with other teams like the Chicago Bulls or the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Utah squad currently sits 11th in the Western Conference with a 29-31 record.
The Utah squad has already played all of their competitions ahead of All-Star Weekend and will face off against the Thunder through next Thursday, February 23 (8:00pm CST).
