Tiger Woods is under investigation for presenting a tampon to Justin Thomas after passing him in the opening round of Thursday’s Genesis Invitational.
Woods was paired with Thomas and Rory McIlroy at Riviera Country Club as the 15-time major champion returned to competitive golf for the first time in seven months after last playing at the Open Championship in St Andrews in July.
The 47-year-old was able to pass his two younger opponents on the Los Angeles course on occasion, and on the ninth hole Woods hit further than Thomas and then handed him a tampon as the two went for their second shots.
World No. 7 Thomas took the tampon before quickly dropping it on the floor, prompting the pair to laugh and hug.
Neither Woods nor Thomas were asked about the incident in their post-round interviews.
The American duo and four-time Major winner McIlroy will play together again on Friday as they attempt to make the cut and advance to the weekend’s PGA Tour event.
Woods shot 69 to end the first round in twos, five shots behind leaders Keith Mitchell and Max Homa.

Irish rugby player Anna Caplice tweeted: “If the world in general respected women I could see the funny side of it. But it doesn’t. So I don’t.”
How is Woods related to Thomas?
Woods, 47, and Thomas, 29, have developed a close friendship over the years and live close together in Florida.
The pair have played together many times, with their bond being best shown at the PNC Championship, where Woods and his 14-year-old son Charlie were paired with Thomas and his father.
Of their relationship, Woods said, “We became so close that I think Charlie is like Justin’s little brother that he never had and Justin became the little brother that I never had. We’re very close to the family and we do a lot of things together and to be able to have that experience again tomorrow.”
As Woods recovered from his 2021 car accident that left him seriously injured, Thomas was visibly emotional when asked about his boyfriend. He said: “I have a bad stomach. It hurts to see one of my closest friends have an accident and boy I just hope he’s okay. I’m just worried about his kids. I’m sure they are fighting.”
