There’s no denying that Margot Robbie will be charming the screens in Babylon, Paramount’s upcoming feature film that chronicles the motion picture industry’s transition from the silent era to early talkies in the 1920s.
And what better way to capture the glitz and glamor of the Roaring Twenties than through a fabulous wardrobe. In fact, the first outfit Margot’s character Nellie wears in the new film is a daring red playsuit with a plunging neckline and sarong skirt.
Babylon costume designer Mary Zophres revealed that Anna May Wong – the first Chinese-American film star – was the inspiration behind the red-hot look.
“There’s a photo of her and she’s got this scarf wrapped around her neck coming down,” she exclusively told E! News about the Hollywood pioneer. “That’s when the idea for Margot came to me.”
According to Zophres, the fiery playsuit should make a statement.
“It says strength, power, anger, passion and all those things that the audience wants them to know about Nellie in the first 20 minutes of the movie,” she told E! News. “It’s a very daring and provocatively dressed time.”
