6. Beyoncé inspired Queen Charlotte’s look
Produced by Shonda Rhimes, the multi-talented mastermind behind shows like Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder, Bridgerton has been acclaimed for its diverse cast. For example, Guyanese-British actress Golda Rosheuvel plays Queen Charlotte of England, who was a real person, on the show. According to PBS, some historians believe that King George III’s wife was a descendant of a Portuguese royal family of African descent.
“When I researched Queen Charlotte and found out that she was of African descent, it gave me so much more leeway to create her beautiful looks,” the show’s makeup and hair designer Marc Pilcher told Vogue. “I used the silhouettes of the period, but to celebrate their ethnicity I used curls, braids and styles with afro texture. Her huge afro was in the shape of a Gainsborough wig, but was influenced by Beyoncé as Foxxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers in Gold Member.”
Pilcher echoed his comments to Essence, saying, “I saw Beyoncé Knowles in Austin Powers Goldmember and I was like, ‘This is what I want.’ I wanted the biggest afro anyone had ever seen. This wig was actually four or five wigs all clipped together. So we had the wigs for the curls and then we bought afros and then straightened them and put them on curling irons and back brushed them through so we get the best afro volume and then sewed them on top of each other to get that beautiful shape .
