In a new interview, Shadow and Bone showrunners Eric Heisserer and Daegan Fryklind have revealed some of the thought processes behind season two’s customization issues. It’s a complicated endeavor given that the show is inspired not only by Leigh Bardugo’s original Shadow and Bone trilogy, but also by the Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom duology.

The showrunners told Entertainment Weekly that season two will cover “multiple books” and touch on “deep-cut” storylines that even Bardugo didn’t see coming. Shadow and Bone won’t be returning to Netflix until spring, so the showrunners have been tight-lipped about the details beyond that — though they’ve been willing to say that season two will cover the second book in the Shadow trilogy, Siege and Storm, and will include some Events of the third book, Ruin and Rising. And while the characters from Six of Crows are known to have appeared in Shadow and Bone’s first season, Heisserer and Fryklind say the duology’s plot “will require its own lane,” so fans can expect a similar mix of plots in a way, which creates a unique and more nuanced look at the Young Adult series.

The mix of the mid YA Shadow and Bone trilogy (which I think is aggressively good) and the upper YA/more mature Six of Crows duology (which remain a couple of my favorite fantasy books, they are so exceptional) was one of the best parts of the show. It enhanced the source material and provided an easy impetus for change, giving all characters a richer storyline.

Heisserer and Fryklind told the magazine that they are excited to present the new storyline, which will feature Nikolia Latntsov (Patrick Gibson), Grisha twins Tamar Kir-Bataar (Anna Leong Brophy) and Tolya Yul-Bataar (Lewis Tan). Wylan Hendriks (Jack Wolfe). There will be “Crows storyline” references, but they’re saving the “Ice Court Job” for another season. While it is true that this is the main plot of the second Crows book, the plot of the first book focuses on a plot to create an artificial enhancement drug (Jura Parem) for the Grisha based on a plant that is a fictional Has positioning not dissimilar to Opium.

With multiple storylines in the new season, there will be more ways in which the threads of the books tie together in the TV series — and from what they’ve been able to reveal, the showrunners sound determined to have fun and create a cohesive story that embellished and complemented to the plot of the original book series. Shadow and Bone season 2 arrives on Netflix on March 16th.
