Going through the stats and compiling our Team of the Week from the first weekend of the 2023 Rugby League season…

1. Lachlan Coote (Hull-Kingston Rover)

The former Scotland full-back was heavily involved as Hull KR opened the new Super League season with a 27-18 home win against Wigan Warriors on Saturday.

Coote assisted three of the hosts’ attempts and assisted three line breaks, along with breaking the line once and busting four tackles. He gained 135 meters and also scored three goals.

2. Tom Davies (Catalan’s Dragons)

Davies has proved a prolific goalscorer during his time with the Catalans, opening the 2023 season with two goals as they beat Wakefield Trinity 38-24 away on Friday and provided an assist.

He gained 120 yards and made 70 yards from contact after four tackle busts and a line break, edging out Hull FC’s Adam Swift, who also crossed twice, for a spot on our team.

3. Liam Sutcliffe (Hull FC)

The center got off to a strong start to his time at Hull FC, scoring a try as the Black and Whites enjoyed a thrilling 32-30 win at home to Castleford Tigers.

Sutcliffe’s attempt came in a match in which he lost three tackles, gained 135 yards and added 45 post-contact yards.

4. Shaun Kenny Dowall (Hull Kingston Rovers)

Three tries from the former New Zealand international helped the Robins to a memorable home win in the opening round against the Betfred Challenge Cup holders.

Kenny-Dowall’s attempts came on the backs of three line breaks and eight tackle busts, along with a 124 yard gain and 42 post-contact yards.

5. Tom Johnstone (Catalan’s Dragons)

The winger’s return to his old hometown of Wakefield got his Catalan career off to a flying start with a hat-trick in the Dragons win.

Johnstone broke seven tackles and also made a line break, gaining 189 yards and adding 62 post-contact yards.

6. Adam Keighran (Catalan’s Dragons)

The new signing from the Sydney Roosters, forced into a stalemate in the absence of Mitchell Pearce, proved adept in the role for the French club as they emerged victorious from Wakefield.

Keighran assisted two tries and a line break, gaining 68 yards with the ball in hand, breaking two tackles and the line once, along with five goals.

7. Lewis Dodd (St Helens)

The 21-year-old played his first competitive game since recovering from an Achilles injury that ruled him out for most of last season and made his name in St Helens history in the World Club Challenge.

Dodd coolly landed the crucial drop goal in golden point overtime to seal a 13-12 win over the Penrith Panthers after providing assured presence in the halves throughout the game and the NRL champions with had kept his pedal game on his toes.

8. Alex Walmsley (St Helens)

As so often during his Saints career, the mainstay led again as his side cemented their status as the best club side in the world by beating Penrith.

Walmsley gained 150 yards with the ball and broke two tackles while making 36 tackles on the defensive side for St Helens.

9. Andy Ackers (Salford Red Devils)

The England international was the focus of both attack and defense for the Red Devils as they opened the season with a vibrant 20-10 win at newly promoted Leigh Centurions.

In addition to scoring a try, Ackers assisted a line break and broke the line himself once, as well as three tackles. He also had 46 tackles in defense and played the full 80 minutes for Salford.

10. Paul Vaughan (Warrington Wolves)

The former Australia international was named Player of the Match for his starring role in his debut as Warrington started the new Super League season with a 42-10 home win over Leeds Rhinos.

Vaughan gained 209 yards and made 139 post-contact yards, along with a bust and a completion of 23 of 23 attempted tackles on defense.

11. Kenny Edwards (Castleford Tigers)

Although he ended as a loser, the second row was a big presence for Castleford in the back row as they were ousted by Hull FC.

Edwards scored a try and assisted a line break, along with a one-off break of the line and a four-tackle miss as he gained 72 yards. He also made 31 tackles on defense.

12. Curtis Sironen (St Helens)

Sironen pulled off a major stint for Saints on the second row during the World Club Challenge win over Penrith, including providing the assist for one of their tries.

The second row broke the line once, breaking three tackles en route to 155 yards and 41 post-contact yards and 40 tackles on defense.

13. James Harrison (Warrington Wolves)

The former Batley Bulldogs and Featherstone Rovers forward put on a strong performance as Wolves started the campaign with a home win over last year’s Grand Final runners-up.

Harrison scored a try at the back, gaining 148 yards and 59 yards from contact, destroying five tackles and making a line break. He also made 33 of 33 attempted tackles on the defensive end.
