Iga Swiatek – the reigning tennis queen – and bagel queen – has added a new record to her growing cache. The 21-year-old clinched the Doha title over the weekend, beating Jessica Pegula in a one-sided final (6-3, 6-0) to set the record for fewest games lost en route to a WTA Open title era on .
Swiatek lost five games in three rounds in Doha as she defeated Danielle Collins 6-0, 6-1 in the first round before earning a bye to the semifinals when Belinda Bencic was eliminated. In the semifinals, she defeated world No. 11 Veronika Kudermetova 6-0, 6-1.
Prior to last week, no WTA player had ever won a title in less than seven games. That honor goes to Chris Evert, who clinched the Lugano title with just seven losses (in four games).
Evert (1974 Indianapolis, 5 games), Steffi Graf (1988 Mahwah, 4 games) and Monica Seles (1992 Houston, 4 games) had each previously won a tournament and lost only eight games.
