Liam Farrell has been named Wigan captain for the 2023 season
Liam Farrell may have been named Wigan Warriors captain for the 2023 Betfred Super League season but the back row is happy to leave the motivational talks to his teammate Brad O’Neill.
What started as a joke from O’Neill during a training session after a particularly grueling few days of preseason training has quickly devolved into providing the team with a quote of the day at the urging of head coach Matt Peet.
For the 20-year-old whore, the more cliche or cheesy the quote, the better. For Farrell, however, the humor doesn’t come so much from what O’Neill is saying, but rather from why he chose to say it.

“I wouldn’t say I have any favourites, but the best part of the quote is probably the explanation,” Farrell told InNewCL Sports.
“Sometimes when he’s done with his quote the guys ask him to explain it – and let’s say it can be very difficult at times!
“Matty has spoken a lot about the culture but the way he was brought in is to train hard when you need to and have fun when you can. And to enjoy each other’s company.
“A small part of what Brad does is laugh and joke, but also make sure we take care of each other and enjoy each other’s company, and we’re really good at that.”

Farrell’s approach to captaincy is more about being heard only when necessary, an attitude instilled in his predecessor as skipper, Tommy Leuluai, and others who preceded him.
As a youngster, the Wigan St Patricks product watched his distant cousin Andy Farrell guide hometown club Wigan to Super League and Challenge Cup triumphs, while the 32-year-old had Sean O’Loughlin as a player – now manager at the Warriors’ staff – as its skipper.
These qualities he saw in others all contributed to how Farrell behaved, along with his own ideas of what makes a good leader.
“Be vocal when you need to, but the most important thing for me is to be humble, set the bar and make sure you play well on your own individual accomplishments,” Farrell said. “It’s about making sure you’re the best you can be at all times.
Be loud when you have to be loud, but the most important thing to me is to be humble, set standards high and make sure you play well on your own individual performances. It makes sure you are the best you can be all the time.
Wigan’s Liam Farrell on his approach to captaincy
“I’ve been very fortunate to have been with Sean O’Loughlin and Tommy Leuluai for a long time and inherited some of their traits.
“Obviously to see previous captains like Andy Farrell who has been a great leader for the club – if I could pick up on any of those qualities I would be very proud.
“I’m very grateful that the club chose me as captain and I hope I can lead the team well this year.”
Wigan enter the 2023 season as holders of the Betfred Challenge Cup, lifting the trophy for the first time in nine years after a narrow 16-14 win over the Huddersfield Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last May.

Their Super League hopes ended in a 20-8 loss to Leeds Rhinos in the play-off semifinals but while there was disappointment at not traveling to Old Trafford for the Grand Final, Farrell is still thinking about Peet’s first year as manager after successful.
The Warriors kick off their 2023 season with a replay of last year’s opener when they travel to Hull Kingston Rovers for an early afternoon clash on Saturday (kick-off 1pm). The foundation for the season was laid with a 24:10 win last year.
Farrell is, of course, keen for Wigan to make a mark as he leads the team at Sewell Group Craven Park in a year as the team look to end dominance from bitter rivals St Helens and clinch the Super League title for the first time time since 2018.
“Our game plan will be very simple,” said Farrell. “It’s early in the year so we just want to make sure we’re getting our simple stuff and the basics right.
Liam Farrell and Wigan are aiming for another Round 1 win away against Hull KR
“Hull KR is not an easy place and I have been there many times. It’s a hostile place, but also one where the fans jump on you.
“Hopefully it will be a good game and we want to set our standards high there.”
