It takes courage to play for your country.
This year, Australia’s Storm Sanders and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia took it to the next level, winning the Billie Jean King Cup Heart Award.
Sanders won the award for her performance in the BJK Cup final; Haddad Maia took home awards for her performances in the play-offs.
Sanders won three out of four games in the Billie Jean King Cup Final as she led Australia to the final. Ranked 237th, Sanders had three wins against higher-ranked players. In the final against Switzerland, she lost 6:3, 4:6, 6:3 to 35th seeded Jil Teichmann.

“It’s a great honor to receive it because for me it’s something I’ve dreamed of representing my country and my team,” said Sanders.
Haddad Maia, who finished the season ranked 15th in the WTA Rankings, was undefeated at the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup. She also won the Heart Award for her performance in the Americas group in April.

“This award is so special because it says so much about the attitude and value of the players. It motivates me to stay strong and pursue new goals for 2023,” said the 26-year-old.
