Che Adams (centre) scores Southampton's second goal against Lincoln City in the EFL CupChe Adams has scored eight goals this season, including four in the EFL Cup

The Che Adams double helped Southampton come from behind and avoid a shock against League One Lincoln City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The victory gives Nathan Jones his first victory as Saints manager after losing his only game in charge at Liverpool on November 12.

His side fell behind early on when Gavin Bazunu failed to deal with Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ clipped clearance.

But Adams scored both sides of the break to put Southampton through.

The two goals mark the first time Southampton have scored more than one goal in a game since beating Chelsea on August 30.

It is the first time they reach the quarter-finals of the competition since losing to Manchester United in the 2017 final.

After waiting more than six weeks for his home bow following his move from Luton, Jones wanted a better start but Bazunu, under pressure from Paudie O’Connor, couldn’t deal with the faulty release and the ball rebounded .

It took Southampton a while to settle down but they found an equalizer when Mohamed Elyounoussi found space on the right side of the box and Adams – who might have been offside – dunked into the box to head home.

Lincoln, playing in the fourth round for the first time since 1967/68, was the better side early in the second half, but Jones made a triple substitution, going from 5-3-2 to 4-3-3.

It brought immediate improvement and the second goal came when Elyounoussi’s acrobatic effort was blocked and then bundled over the line by Adams for his second brace of the season.

Lincoln pushed for an equalizer late after leaving gaps for Southampton to exploit, with Samuel Edozie and Adams both missing good chances to help Saints score.
