South Korea announced on Monday that it will launch its own 6G network using world-class technology, advanced next-generation software-based cellular networks and by strengthening its network supply chains. This was announced by the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT.
The South Korean government will encourage local companies to produce materials, components and equipment for the development of their 6G network. It also plans to strengthen its supply chain to support this network. A feasibility study to explore the 6G core technology is already underway. The project is valued at 625.3 billion won (about US$482.1 million).
With this initiative, South Korea aims to surpass the rest of the world over 6G technology. South Korea is Asia’s fourth largest economy and accounted for 25.9% of 5G patents in 2022 (China accounted for 26.8%). The South Korean government hopes to break the 6G patents in the competition over 30% or more.
6G will merge the virtual with reality, according to Zhang Yongtao, deputy general manager of Ericsson’s China Technology Division. He suggests that 6G will bring holographic communications from science fiction to reality.
