Joey Carbery has been called up to the Ireland squad for Saturday’s Six Nations game against Italy in Rome.

Munster’s fly-half Carbery was called in as additional cover for Johnny Sexton, who is recovering from a leg injury sustained in Ireland’s 32-19 win over France in Dublin nine days ago.

The 27-year-old was overlooked by Ireland’s first six-nation squad, with Leinster’s Ross Byrne favored as the No.10 substitute in their first two wins.

Prop Cian Healy and hooker Dan Sheehan were both added to Andy Farrell’s 37-man roster after recovering from their respective hamstring injuries.

Tadhg Beirne will miss the rest of the tournament after being out for up to 12 weeks. He underwent ankle surgery after being substituted off against France early in the second half.

His colleague from the second row, Joe McCarthy, was also ruled out from the rest of the Six Nations campaign because of an ankle injury.
