England striker Shaunagh Brown is retiring from rugby at the end of the month.

Brown, who played flanker and prop for the Red Roses and represented her country at the recent Rugby World Cup, is hoping to be eliminated in the Harlequins’ Premier 15s game against the Bristol Bears on December 27.

The 32-year-old only started playing professionally after representing England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the hammer, but has won 30 caps for her country.

Brown also won four women’s Six Nations titles and the Premier 15s title with Quins last year.

“I couldn’t have imagined a better way to spend the last seven years of my life than to dedicate it to rugby and women,” said Brown, who was an influential figure in women’s sport.

“And although I will stop playing the game, I will still push the boundaries for rugby and women alike.

“Rugby has always changed my life for the better. I’m so thankful I found the sport. Now it’s time to focus on getting other people to find rugby and making it change their lives too.

“To all the coaches I’ve worked with over the years and all my teammates, I want to thank them for their support and everything they’ve done.

“To those who listened to me, pushed me and reminded me of excellence and told me I could achieve more than I could ever dream of and told me I was unstoppable, pushed me to… Believing myself and made me realize how much better I could do, thank you.”

England women’s head coach Simon Middleton added: “Shaunagh was a breath of fresh air when she first came into the programme. Her positivity and attitude of being the best she could be and embracing the opportunity was really refreshing.

“She was quite an amazing player in her prime. In the Allianz Premier 15 final in 2021, Shaunagh did some spectacular things on the field. She was an outstanding player.

“Shaunagh was and always will be an important part of the Red Roses family.”
