Scotland is currently 25th in the FIFA world rankings and will miss next year’s World Cup
Michael McArdle has been appointed performance manager for girls’ and women’s football at the Scottish Football Association.
The former Ayr United assistant manager joins from St Mirren where he was head of academy coaching.
He will be responsible for identifying and developing talent and creating pathways into the national team.
“It’s an exciting time. It’s an honor to be in a position to help shape the future of national football,” said McArdle.
“We have real potential for further growth ahead of us and a fantastic vision for how girls’ and women’s football should develop.
“We are increasing resources in all areas that are critical to the development of women’s football – from talent identification to development pathways – and we are committed to fulfilling the potential of every single girl or woman who wants to play football in Scotland, to maximize.”
McArdle’s appointment comes a week after it was revealed that the Scotland women’s national team is taking legal action against the SFA in a fight for equal pay and conditions.
The squad is led by captain Rachel Corsie, who has already been contacted by the Football Association to clarify allegations of non-physical abuse within the women’s team.
The SFA had said “equality should be at the core of game development at all levels”.
