Savannah Marshall could face Claressa Shields in her next fight or challenge Franchon Crews Dezurn for the undisputed super middleweight title.

Marshall lost a thrilling duel with Shields in October for the undisputed middleweight title.

But Marshall attributes the loss to the way she boxed and is adamant a rematch would produce a different outcome.

Johnny Nelson and Gary Logan discuss whether Savannah Marshall’s epic fight with Claressa Shields was the best fight of 2022

“I relied heavily on tactics. I decided to come forward and push her back, which she’s never done before,” Marshall told InNewCL Sports.

“If you look at her past fights she’s never been pushed back, she usually blows after about four rounds so it was a gamble to continue in that way.”

Coach Peter Fury “100% to blame!” She laughed.

Savannah Marshall has called for a rematch with Claressa Shields and claims she was never injured during their “close fight”.

“He was probably the most hated man in the world to me at some point,” she said with a smile, but added, “For me it’s a special bond that you have with your coach.

“It’s one of those things. Peter is only human, I’m only human so I can’t really point the finger.

“I trusted Peter from day one and I can’t fault him.”

She continued: “We work as a team anyway. It just never went according to plan. I’m devastated, absolutely devastated. My life could be so different if I won.

Over two million viewers tuned in to Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall, making it the most-watched professional women’s boxing event in history and creating the largest audience for a live women’s sporting event ever on Sky

“It’s a funny scenario because even though I got hit after getting hit the position I’m in now, the publicity, my stock, has gone up.”

Marshall insists she can win a rematch with other tactics.

“I think I could have scratched a tie,” she said of the first fight. “I think it was closer than what the results said.

“Only me and them really know how that fight went. Who knows which shots landed, which shots missed, which shots hurt. And she knows that was close.

“There were times when I knew she was struggling,” Marshall continued. “Even in that fight, there were times when I caught her with shots that I didn’t really mean to catch her with.

Lightweight champion Katie Taylor believes Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall’s historic all-female card marks a game changer for boxing

“By overtaking her with my skills rather than my size and strength, I believe I can outsmart Claressa.”

But that’s not Marshall’s only next option. Undisputed super middleweight champion Franchon Crews Dezurn has called for a fight with the Brit.

“An offer was made to her before the Claressa fight, she didn’t respond,” Marshall said.

“Now after seeing what happened to me and Claressa at the O2, she knows how crowded it was, the viewership, the response, she knows I’m the cash cow.

Claressa Shields says she would be open to a rematch with Savannah Marshall if her rival were willing to travel to the US

“Well, that’s why she wants a piece.”

The two boxed as amateurs, with Marshall beating Crews Dezurn in the Olympic Test at the ExCel Arena before London 2012.

“I remember that fight. I remember the first shot she threw was so big and massive to the right and missed me by a mile,” Marshall said.

But she added: “I think Franchon’s last fight was probably the best I’ve seen in her box. she is tough

Immediately following their epic fight, Claressa Shields praised Savannah Marshall, saying, “It was the toughest fight of my career.”

“She’s a handful,” Marshall continued. “She likes to spank you and that’s her game.

“She’s really gritty and it all makes for a perfect fight with me and her.”

But the rivalry with Shields will always remain on their agenda. If she became the undisputed champion in the top division, the call for a second fight with Shields would only grow.

If Marshall vs. Crews Dezurn “could right all the mistakes from the last fight, I would be perfect for a rematch with Claressa.”
