England manager Sarina Wiegman said it will be difficult for her team to top an unbeaten 2022 in which they won the European Women’s Championship – but she will ensure they continue their efforts to win the World Cup next year strengthen.
England have not lost in 26 games since Wiegman took charge in September 2021. The Lionesses qualified for the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia with a 100 percent record, beating reigning world champions, the United States, at Wembley earlier this year.
“You can’t beat that – you can only be equal there,” Wiegman told reporters at Wembley Stadium.

“We want to win every game, but we talk about how we can improve the next game… Of course we want to break all records, but breaking a record doesn’t say what you have to do.
“How do we stick together as a team? I really think that’s the beginning. The players are very comfortable with this approach. It’s working very well at the moment and they’re very comfortable. It shows because we’re having fun. ” – and winning helps.”
Before taking charge in England, Wiegman ushered in a new era for the Dutch side, their home nation, guiding them to a surprise Euro 2017 win on home soil followed by a run to the 2019 World Cup final in France.
The new year will offer the 53-year-old another opportunity to claim the trophy she eluded then.

“We absolutely have to get better,” she added. “We have to take our game to the next level to make the chances of success as high as possible. We want to evolve our playstyle so that we remain unpredictable.
“Yes, of course we have to dream. We go to a World Cup just to play, we go there to win.”
