The Turkish butcher “Salt Bae” internet meme was all the rage after Argentina won the World Cup – but now the players’ indifference towards him has gone viral.

Nusret Gokce has been known by the pseudonym ever since a video of him pouring salt over his arm over a steak at one of his first restaurants went viral in 2017.

His presence on the pitch at the Lusail Stadium following Argentina’s first World Cup win in 36 years was quickly picked up by social media – particularly for the new world champions’ seemingly apathetic reactions to his presence.

Lionel Messi was pictured as he appeared to be trying to get away after the Turkish celebrity grabbed his arm, while Lisandro Martinez appeared less than pleased to be pictured next to him with the World Cup trophy.

A compilation video on Twitter by non-enthusiastic gamers alongside Gokce has racked up more than 14 million views since it was posted Monday afternoon.

Gokce posed for photos on the pitch and held the trophy alone – something that’s against FIFA rules.

“The original FIFA World Cup Trophy may only be touched and held by a very select group of people, which includes past FIFA World Cup winners and heads of state,” reads the FIFA website.

Salt Bae had a role in previous controversies during the World Cup. Brazil’s players were criticized for grandiose celebrations when they visited his restaurant in Doha after beating Switzerland in the group stage.

His relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino appears to date back several years, with the couple starring in a 2019 video in which he appeared to be supporting his Dubai restaurant.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron – another friend of Infantino’s – was also spotted on the pitch trying to comfort Kylian Mbappe after the full-time whistle, prompting similar criticism.

The Argentina team had to abandon their open-topped bus for a helicopter after a member of the crowd managed to board the vehicle during their victory parade.

The Argentine FA confirmed that Monday’s bus tour of Buenos Aires for the victorious players was canceled for safety reasons and the team took helicopters along the parade route instead.

The world champions were evacuated from the open-top bus during the tour after a fan jumped on the vehicle as it passed under a bridge.

The AFA said: “Players from the Argentina football team ended the celebrations by flying in a helicopter over the crowds of fans that had gathered in the city.

“They made this decision after making sure they couldn’t continue on the bus in the middle of the crowd.”
