Rangers manager Michael Beale is telling his injured squad to ‘bite down on the gumguard and go’
Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack, John Lundstram and Alfredo Morelos all struggled with fitness ahead of Tuesday’s 3-2 win at Aberdeen, Beale revealed.
Captain James Tavernier traveled to Pittodrie alone after feeling unwell.
“If we didn’t let everyone who had a wiggle, a runny nose or a little bit of a sore throat play, we’d have trouble getting an 11 out,” Beale said.
Borna Barisic has yet to return after the World Cup and Antonio Colak, Kemar Roofe, Ianis Hagi, Tom Lawrence, Ridvan Yilmaz, Filip Helander and John Souttar are among those missing for Friday’s visit to Ross County.
Beale said he will make five changes for the trip to Dingwall to build on back-to-back 3-2 wins over Hibernian and Aberdeen.
“Connor Goldson played his first game [after injury]ben [Davies] comes back but he had some problems,” he explained.
“Glen Kamara probably should have had the surgery in the last few months but he went through with it [leg problem]. It’s manageable. When he plays it swells, so we have to be careful with the way we train.
“We’re managing Ryan Jack’s minutes and John Lundstram had an injection to sit on the bench.
“What you won’t know is that the day before the game against Aberdeen, Alfredo Morelos also had to come in from training and play when he shouldn’t have. I have to make it.
“He’s one of those players who play through the pain barrier for the team, so I’ll never question him in terms of his mentality. You cannot question his dedication.
“Tav traveled alone. He was a big, big doubt and you probably saw bits of that in his performance. But he’s fine now.
“At the moment it’s the results that matter. It’s a busy schedule so we all have to bite our gums and leave.”
Barisic rejoins the squad on Boxing Day, although Beale said the left-back is not necessarily going to oust teenager Adam Devine.
Colak and Roofe are also expected to be fit against Motherwell on December 28.
