Taylor Sheridan lifts the curtain on the explosive finale of 1883.

The creator of the Yellowstone prequel recently opened up about the shocking ending to the Paramount+ series, which saw the deaths of two main characters: Isabel May’s Elsa Dutton, who succumbed to her injuries after being hit by an arrow, and Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott ) by suicide. And more specifically, how Paramount executives like President Bob Bakish — who had previously ordered more episodes of 1883 — reacted to the very definitive conclusion.

“I know they read the scripts, but they don’t read scripts,” Taylor told Deadline December 20, “so I don’t think they digested what just happened when they read the last episode of 1883 , although I made it clear from the start.

The Hell or High Water writer noted that it wasn’t until after they watched the finale that they really understood what he was getting at.

“The story I heard is that Bob Bakish saw it and said, ‘Wait a minute, she’s dying! do they all die? What are we doing in season two?’” Taylor continued. “I said, ‘There’s no second season.’ They say, ‘There had better be a friggin’ second season because we’ve already picked it up.’ I’m sitting here and I’m like, ‘Guys, everyone’s dead.’”
