Smartphone companies often introduce their own chips to reduce costs and have better control over their devices’ processing and computational models. For example, Oppo has its own NPU MariSilicon X and a connectivity chip called MariSilicon Y, but it still lacks a real SoC – system-on-a-chip.
Oppo needs to have a real chipset to be competitive in the market, according to a Mediatek executive speaking at a foreign investment forum in Hsinchu, Taiwan. However, an insider revealed that the Guangdong manufacturer has already taped its chip and it will be launched in 2024.
Taping-out is an electronics design term that means that the integrated circuit design process is complete and the product is ready to be sent to manufacturing.
The fact that the conference is being held in Hsinchu is no coincidence – the city in northwestern Taiwan is where TSMC has set up its headquarters, and we can see whether the manufacturer is a partner of Oppo or not.
Previous reports have already shown that Oppo has invested more than 10 billion CNY (about 1.4 billion US dollars) in IC design R&D departments across China, including Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai.
