ColorOS 13 launched on August 18, and Oppo’s focused efforts to bring it to existing phones made for the fastest launch of any ColorOS release to date. But this announcement comes with even more exciting news – Oppo will expand software support for select flagships from 2023 onwards.
It is planned to offer 4 operating system updates and 5 years of security patches for certain premium models. That’s in line with the commitment OnePlus made earlier this year. Samsung was the first company to offer this update schedule, which has been extended to its 2021 flagships. Google is (embarrassingly) behind with just 3 OS updates and 5 years of patches.
Coming back to the current version of the operating system: ColorOS 13 has been rolled out internationally to 33 Oppo models, more than any other previous version (50% more than ColorOS 12, for example). This allowed it to reach three times more users than ColorOS 12 in the first four months after its unveiling (October 11 to February 11 for v12, August 18 to December 18 for v13).
This makes v13 the largest and fastest update rollout in ColorOS history. Congratulations to Oppo and Kudos for the extended software support – hopefully this will put pressure on other manufacturers to go beyond the unfortunately usual 1-2 OS update promises.
