Bugatti has shed light on a never-before-seen variant of the Chiron called Profilée. The coupe was designed with production in mind, but it was ultimately canned. It was intended as a “less radical interpretation” of the Pur Sport, and the only existing example is scheduled to be auctioned in 2023.

Customer requests shaped this otherwise fruitless evolution of the Chiron: Bugatti explains that its customers were asking for a toned-down version of the Pur Sport that focused more on touring than handling. The designers gave the coupe a new aerodynamic profile, characterized by wider air dams and a larger front grille, a redesigned front splitter and a relatively small rear wing with a hollow center section. The wing’s signature shape was chosen because it adds stability by giving downforce to the rear end while allowing hot air a path out of the engine bay.

Bugatti also made changes to the steering and suspension systems, giving the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission 15% shorter gear ratios. The Profilée, on the other hand, prides itself on being the fastest accelerating member of the Chiron range: it takes 2.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill. Keep your foot down and the speedometer reads 124 mph in 5.5 seconds, 186 mph in 12.4 seconds and runs to 236 mph. Those numbers are powered by an 8.0-litre, quad-turbocharged, mid-mounted W16 engine 1,500 hp provided.

Executives planned to limit Profilée production to 30 units, but eventually canceled the project.

“We started designing and developing the Chiron Profilée in autumn 2020. When we saw that the pre-series vehicle was being phased out, all the Chiron seats, which were limited to just 500 units, had been taken,” explains Bugatti President Christophe Piochon.

Profilée production never started, but the only example built is fully road legal in European markets. It’s finished in a silver tone called Argent Atlantique that was specially developed for it, and the lower section of the car is bare carbon fiber tinted Bleu Royal Carbon. Inside, the Profilée is the first Chiron to feature braided leather on the dashboard, center console and door panels. Bugatti points out that it took over 2,600 meters of leather strips to complete the interior. The cabin is equipped with two comfort seats.

RM Sotheby’s will auction the Chiron Profilée on February 1, 2023 in Paris, France. Bugatti states that a percentage of the proceeds are donated to charity. No sales estimate was released, but the Profilée should sell for significantly more than a standard Chiron. Rarity aside, it’s also the last street-legal W16-powered car Bugatti will sell after the Chiron and Mistral sell out.
