The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Monday it asked Tesla to provide more information after one of its vehicles collided with a fire truck in California, Bloomberg reported.

The agency hasn’t confirmed to InNewCL what kind of information it’s looking for, but NHTSA likely wants to determine if any of Tesla’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) — Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta — were on at the time of the Crash.

The Contra Costa County Fire Department tweeted about Saturday’s incident and urged road users to slow down and move when approaching emergency vehicles.

“Truck 1 was hit by a Tesla while blocking lanes of I-680 due to a previous accident,” the tweet reads. “Driver declared dead at scene; Passenger was freed and taken to hospital. Four firefighters were also transported for assessment.”

The tweet included photos of the accident, including several of a completely wrecked Tesla.

NHTSA has opened dozens of Special Accident Investigations (SCI) into Tesla vehicles suspected of using Autopilot. Of the 48 SCIs that opened and closed between June 2016 and July 2022, 39 involved Teslas. And of those 39, only three were confirmed not to have engaged autopilot. NHTSA has many open investigations into accidents involving Teslas, some of which have been fatal. The agency does not comment on open investigations.

This latest fatal accident comes days after Tesla issued a recall for 362,758 vehicles to update its FSD software after regulators said FSD could allow vehicles to behave unsafely at intersections and cause accidents . The recall followed a Super Bowl advertisement by Tesla’s biggest hater, The Dawn Project, which urged regulators to ban FSD until critical safety deficiencies are addressed.

Tesla has been audited by a number of federal and state agencies for the security of its ADAS. Earlier this month, the Justice Department requested information about Autopilot and FSD from Tesla, possibly as part of a criminal investigation into the company.
