Adam Smith scores an own goalNewcastle have reached the last eight of the EFL Cup four times from 2014-15

Newcastle reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a hard-fought win over Bournemouth at St James’ Park.

Adam Smith’s own goal proved crucial for the hosts, with the defender accidentally heading past Cherries goalkeeper Mark Travers after an excellent performance from Kieran Trippier.

It was no more than Eddie Howe’s side deserved as the home side created the bulk of the scoring chances.

Newcastle will find out who they meet next in Thursday night’s draw.

Magpies manager Howe had goalkeeper Nick Pope, full-back Trippier and striker Callum Wilson, all part of England’s World Cup squad in Qatar, in the starting XI against Howe’s old club.

Swiss defender Fabian Schar and Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes also started the battle for a home side that appeared almost at full strength in a first competitive game for both clubs since 12 November.

In front of 51,579 spectators, Newcastle repeatedly pushed forward, with Trippier, Schar, Miguel Almiron and Wilson all close to breaking the deadlock in the first half, the latter having also ruled out an offside attempt.

However, the determined and disciplined side of Bournemouth’s Gary O’Neil will also describe themselves as slightly unlucky after missing their few clear chances.

Welsh striker Kieffer Moore headed wide from a good position, substitute Jack Stacey forced Pope to make a good save and Dominic Solanke also saw a late shot which was superbly blocked by the Newcastle keeper.

However, this secured Newcastle, who had beaten the finalists in the 1975/76 season, a fourth quarter-final since 2014/15.
