There was a long — a long — time between “Avatar” and “The Way of Water,” and in the ten-plus years it took James Cameron to film his sequel and portions of Bob’s of maybe three more films beyond, there was many ideas for what came next in the stories of Jake and Neytiri left off the table. But now you can check out one of these ideas in a form that won’t take three hours of your life in a dark room.
To celebrate the launch of The Way of Water, io9 takes a look at the second two volumes of Dark Horse Comics’ Avatar: The High Ground. Written by Sherri L. Smith, The Graphic Novel Trilogy – With Artwork by Guilherme Balbi, Michael Atiyeh and Wes Dzioba, Volume 1; Art by Diego Galindo, Gabriel Guzman, George Quadros and DC Alonso on Volume 2; and art by Augustin Padilla, Miguel Angel Ruiz, and Michael Atiyeh on Volume 3, all with lettering by Michael Heisler – is an adaptation of one of Cameron’s early ideas for the plot of his second Avatar film, of which we only get a glimpse in the opening act of The Way of Water. Even if that means we missed seeing the Na’vi shooting bows at humans in space!

Set over a decade after the end of the original film, The High Ground follows Jake and Neytiri after they start a family of their own together as they learn the horrific news that the RDA is returning to Pandora and brings with it war as they try to destroy the planet to be reconquered as a new home for mankind. Now with a family left to defend himself over the choices he made in the original film, Jake’s stakes are higher than ever – and sets the stage for the conflicts we see in The Way of Water.
