The future of AI robotics never seems to have a silver lining, and here’s a new nightmarish vision from Yeon Sang-ho’s latest movie, Jung_E. The Netflix release is scheduled to hit the streaming service exclusively on January 20, 2023.

The official Netflix synopsis reveals a taste of the plot: “Set in a post-apocalyptic 22nd century, a researcher at an AI lab leads efforts to end a civil war by cloning the brain of a heroic soldier—her mother.”

Check out the teaser below:

The sleek, dystopian sheen of Kronoid Labs “most advanced AI battle warrior” evokes a sense of dread as the very human-looking creation is built. Even the fully wired brain that looks like one of those steel wool sponges gave me heartache. Designing the teaser, which was like an advertisement for the latest technology upgrade, made me feel like it was more of an “upgrade you” situation. We’re definitely intrigued by this thriller premise and can’t wait to see how the researcher manages to put her mother in the body of what is possibly the world’s most dangerous killer. What could possibly go wrong?

This feels like a new imaginative journey from Yeon, although we’re still hoping for another Busan film. In the meantime, you can also check out the filmmaker’s recent Netflix project Hellbound, a near-future supernatural series based on his webtoon, streaming now. You can watch Jung_E on Netflix from January 23, 2023.
