Michael Smith has celebrated the dramatic win of the World Club Challenge at St Helens while speaking candidly about his own motivation to become a multiple darts world champion.
The Saints’ 13-12 triumph over the Penrith Panthers, crowned by Lewis Dodd’s dramatic golden point drop goal, marked the first win by an English club in Australia since 1994 when Wigan sunk the Brisbane Broncos.
The Super League champions braved a tropical storm and a first-half defeat of Tommy Makinson with a head injury to claim a stunning victory that was celebrated in the Smith household.

“It was a huge win for St Helens because we also came as underdogs and to do it in their own backyard with a gold point it’s huge for the city and it’s huge for the Super League back home in England” , said ‘Bully Boy’, who defeated Michael van Gerwen at Alexandra Palace to claim his first PDC World Championship title in January.
“You never write the Saints off and the lads showed it. They kept plowing forward, even from the first kick off.”
“We weren’t there to do numbers. We were there to compete.”
When the St Helens substitutes and staff rushed onto the field to celebrate Dodd’s kick, it was a special moment for captain James Roby, the only active survivor of the Saints’ 2007 triumph, who was resigning in hopes of another Southern hemisphere crack delayed giants.
“The players rave about Roby and so do the fans. He’s so important to the St Helens team. It’s part of the furniture, it’s been there for so long, and it’s just unreal,” Smith said.
“Even though this is his last season, you can’t see him finish because he’s so good. Age has not caught up with him at all.
“We supposedly just beat the best team in the world, so who’s going to beat us now?”

Smith defeated Dimitri Van den Bergh 6-4 to win the third night of the Premier League in Glasgow and move up to the top of the table.
The 32-year-old, who broke his big duck by winning the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton last year, is hoping to do it all again this Thursday night in Dublin, but his main motivation is to become a multiple world champion.
He said: “I didn’t have time to sit down and think about what I was doing. But that’s what I wanted. I wanted to be world champion, constantly playing games and traveling, so I’m looking forward to it.” .
“I’ve never been world number one except now, so it’s about thinking about staying there and wanting to win more.
“Before the World Cup, the motivation was to be world champion, but now I’m, I want to motivate myself to be multiple world champions and win two, three or four. That motivates me.”
