It’s a partnership in high-tech heaven: Google is collaborating with Mercedes-Benz to build an advanced digital in-car information system based on geospatial data and the Google Maps platform.
The offering, which will be branded as a Mercedes product as part of the company’s forthcoming MB.OS operating system, will offer “detailed information about locations, real-time and predictive traffic information, automatic rerouting and more,” according to a statement from Mercedes. It will also bring cloud and the YouTube app to the automotive environment.
Both companies say the pairing will be the start of a long-term strategic partnership to tailor a “superior navigation experience thanks to ease of use and superb graphics on the vehicle’s high-resolution screen.”
“This is a licensing agreement that represents a ‘win-win’ situation for both parties,” Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said at a press conference Wednesday during an event at its research and development center in Sunnyvale, California. “We are the complete architects of the stack.”
As of now, the automaker announces that it will give customers access to the first new features, such as location details, provided by Google. The new feature will be delivered via an over-the-air software update. The automaker also said it intends to use Google Cloud’s AI and machine learning capabilities to “rapidly develop new models and improve customer experiences.”
