Chelsea manager Graham Potter hopes negotiations to extend Mason Mount’s contract at the club will be completed ‘quickly’.

The England midfielder is in the last 18 months of his current contract at Stamford Bridge.

Mount, 24, has been struggling for form lately and has not started for the Blues since their 0-0 draw with Fulham in early February.

“It’s always complicated, there’s always negotiation,” Potter said.

Chelsea have bolstered their midfield with the record-breaking British signing of Enzo Fernandez in a deal worth £107million, but former Brighton boss Potter still sees Mount as an important part of his plans.

“Best I leave it between Mason and the club,” he added. “It’s the best way to deal with it.

“He was fantastic working with him, an important player for us and obviously I hope it gets resolved quickly.”

Chelsea lost defenders Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen on a free transfer at the end of last season.

The club would like to avoid such situations in the future and plan not to let key players get to the point where their contracts last less than two years.

Offering long-term deals, like the eight-and-a-half-year deals Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk signed in January, is seen as a way to combat this on a regular basis and offers asset protection.

Chelsea, who have won just two of their last 13 games, welcome managerless Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.
