Marcus Rashford scored in his first game after the 2022 World Cup
Marcus Rashford says there is no time to dwell on England’s early exit from the World Cup or the debate over whether he should have been more involved in the quarter-final defeat by France.
Rashford was back in action for Manchester United eleven days after completing his spell in Qatar, curling an injury-time free-kick just inches over the France bar.
The striker, who scored the culmination of a 2-0 EFL Cup win over championship side Burnley with a superb solo goal, felt no hangover after beating two defenders in the end of a run that included 10 yards in his own half began.
“There’s no time to feel sorry for yourself,” Rashford told Sky Sports.
“It’s more emotional because getting knocked out was such a disappointing feeling [of the World Cup]. They have to pick themselves up and we did that today.”
The manner of Rashford’s goal only fuels the argument that his substitution against France with just five minutes left did not give him enough time to make any significant impact.
Rashford left Qatar as England’s top scorer and his most recent goal put the 25-year-old in ninth place for the season at United.
Manager Erik ten Hag decided not to get involved in the debate about England. But he believes Rashford can make a significant impact at club level this season.
“I can not say anything about this [England],” he said.
“He’s in great form for us and I hope he can keep his focus and performance. His performances improve significantly from game to game.
“He’s a constant threat but he’s also scored a lot of goals and done a lot of defending. I’m really happy with his performance.”
Ten Hag confirmed Rashford’s England team-mate Harry Maguire missed the game due to illness.
The United boss doesn’t know if Maguire will be fit enough for the December 27 encounter with Nottingham Forest and says the situation will be monitored in the hours and days to come.
Future at Old Trafford for Wan-Bissaka?
There was also a positive atmosphere around Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The £50million former Crystal Palace man seemed overwhelmed at United as an injury limited him to a single four-minute substitute appearance this season before the Burnley game.
However, after Wan-Bissaka hauled in his first assist since May 2021 when the 25-year-old superbly matched Bruno Fernandes’ pass back into Christian Eriksen’s run that put United ahead, he delivered a mature performance and Ten Hag says that the full-back has a role to play this season.
“It’s clear he has a future,” said Ten Hag. “He’s had a couple of good years, but this season he’s had a lot of illnesses and injuries.
“Since the restart he’s fit and has been able to train with the team and you can see how he’s making progress. His fitness is getting better and better, his performance is getting better and the support, especially the way he supports at the right moment and with the timing means I’m happy with his performance.”
