Newcastle meet Manchester United in front of the Sky cameras this Sunday in the Carabao Cup final – but what do the stats say ahead of the blockbuster showdown?

The Magpies will aim to win their first major domestic trophy in almost 68 years, but their opponents are clear favorites to win – having won 40 major trophies since Newcastle’s last major domestic title, the FA Cup in 1955.

Comparing the achievements of the two clubs over the years, it’s easy to see why the trophy is expected to go to Old Trafford for the sixth time.

To make life harder for Newcastle, they will play without their suspended first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope, who has kept ten clean sheets in his last 14 games and has made four shutouts in five Carabao Cup games for the club.

Dermot Gallagher thought Nick Pope’s handball against Liverpool was a clear red card.

As a result, either Loris Karius will make his Newcastle debut – or Mark Gillespie will come for just a fourth Newcastle appearance.

The much-maligned Karius is the favorite to start but has not made an appearance as a senior since February 2021 – while on loan at Union Berlin.

His last appearance for an English side was in Liverpool’s 3-1 Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid in May 2018 when his two errors notoriously contributed to his team’s downfall.

That disastrous performance spelled the end of his Liverpool career – but the stats show he deserves more respect.

In fact, he has kept 22 of his 49 Liverpool games without conceding, making it 45 per cent – a rate surpassed only by Ray Clemence (48.6 per cent) in all of club history.

Karius saved his first Premier League shutout against Manchester United in October 2016 and if he can repeat the trick on Sunday, redemption could well be his.

Karius’ shot on target from Gareth Bale’s long-range effort in the Champions League final belies a more than respectable 90 per cent Premier League saving percentage from shots from outside the box. That’s a number only surpassed by 10 goalkeepers in the last 10 years – so this blunder shouldn’t unduly worry Newcastle fans.

Those convinced of Newcastle could instead point to Karius’ passing accuracy of 66.4 per cent, which is significantly better than the club’s usual trustee who averages just 42.8 per cent. After all, it was his distribution that helped Jurgen Klopp decide he was even the right man for his Liverpool team.

Karius at times played like a whiz for Mainz in the Bundesliga, allowing them to put pressure on their opponents, and during his time at Liverpool he was best in the Premier League for interceptions outside his area.

The German’s composure with the ball at his feet could be capitalized on by Eddie Howe as he attempts to become the first England manager to win the League Cup with Middlesbrough in 2004 since Steve McClaren.

Over in Manchester, Erik ten Hag is aiming to become the first Dutch manager to lift the trophy and will be counting on the in-form Marcus Rashford to guide his team to victory.

Rashford is full of confidence after scoring 16 goals in 17 games since the World Cup – one goal every 80 minutes.

He’s not afraid of Newcastle either, with four goals in his last seven games against them, while he also scored twice against Karius in their last meeting in March 2018.

Rashford’s League Cup record has been exceptionally strong over the past five years, with 12 goals and six assists in his last 15 appearances in the competition.

During that period, he averaged a goal every 73 minutes and a goal involvement every 49 minutes in the competition. Should he score on Sunday, he will become the tournament’s all-time top scorer this season – as he is currently tied with Southampton’s Che Adams on five goals.

A goal against Newcastle would be Rashford’s first goal in the cup final after five finals without scoring and should he score it would certainly help him secure his fourth major title at the club.
