Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has ‘a chance’ to face Real Madrid in the Champions League after injuring his shoulder against Newcastle, manager Jurgen Klopp says.

Nunez left the pitch, holding his shoulder after a previous clash with Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier.

“There’s a chance, we’ll have to see how he copes with the pain,” said Klopp.

Uruguay international Nunez has scored 11 goals in all competitions for Liverpool this season after joining from Benfica in the summer.

Liverpool host LaLiga giants Real Madrid for their round of 16 first leg at Anfield on Tuesday (20:00 GMT).

It is the first meeting between the two sides since last year’s Champions League final in Paris, which Real won 1-0.

“I watched it again this weekend,” said Klopp of that game. “I realized why I hadn’t done this before.

“It was torture; we played a good game, we could have won it, but they scored the winning goal. You could see their experience, how little they lose confidence, they are there for their chances. You can do that learn from them.” .

“We’re different teams at different times. Let’s see who goes through.”

Liverpool go into Tuesday’s game with back-to-back wins over Everton and Newcastle in the Premier League, a rebound in form after losing to Wolves and a dismal January in which they have won just one league point.

Klopp has drawn confidence from his side’s recent performances and hopes they have found their form at the right time.

“It’s one of the biggest games in the world [with added] recent history and it will be a top game,” added Klopp.

“I’m really happy we’re playing it now. Four weeks ago it would have been different but life is all about timing and maybe we got back on our feet in time.

“Now we have those two results and hopefully we can build on that, but now we have to play two great games.

“If we don’t do our best, we don’t stand a chance. Real Madrid don’t have to do their best [to] still have a chance.”
