Lee Mason will no longer serve in the Premier League after leaving the refereeing panel PGMOL by mutual consent.

Mason, as video assistant referee, did not draw the guidelines to check for offside after Ivan Toney equalized.

“We would like to thank Lee for his dedication to professional sports and wish him well in the future,” said PGMOL.

After drawing with Brentford, Arsenal fell back to second place after a 3-1 defeat by Manchester City in midweek – a result that put Pep Guardiola’s side at the top.

PGMOL Chief Referee Officer Howard Webb contacted Arsenal to “acknowledge and explain the significant error” that has occurred.

However, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said the apology was unacceptable, adding: “It wasn’t human error, it was not understanding your job.

“It cost Arsenal two points that will not be recovered so we need to find those two points elsewhere in the league.”

Born in Bolton, Mason was a Premier League referee for 15 years, overseeing 287 Premier League games.
