Earlier this month, images of the 2024 Corvette E-Ray managed to slip through cracks in Chevrolet’s online configurator. GM’s engineers have embraced the leak and have now set about publicly testing the mid-engine hybrid without bothering to cover it up. Was the leak strategic? Have they run out of Corvette-shaped camouflage? Did disgruntled test engineers protest prototype camouflage on cold Michigan mornings? We’ll never know, but here’s the car.
This one sports Z06 badges on the flanks, yes, but a look at the rear tells a very different story. The flat-plane cranked V8 in Chevy’s screaming new performance variant is paired with a center-exit exhaust system that’s clearly not installed on this prototype. The combination of the Z06 styling cues with the body colored grille insert and the standard Stingray exhaust perfectly matches what we saw in the configurator a few weeks ago. Those of you who wanted to see the Corvette with fewer contrasting bits will likely appreciate the E-Ray’s aesthetic. The grille’s body-colored finish is also visible on the body-side intakes (note the Z06-style Y-shaped slats), and both the front lip and rocker covers also appear to be painted to match, although these may be Michigan-only is finest road salt. You decide.
Our spies also tell us the engine also lacked the signature pitch of GM’s new flat-plane crank V8. Of course we can’t confirm that; We don’t want to be out in the cold any more than Chevy’s engineers. yes we are with you We’re still not 100% sure what to expect from Chevy’s new hybrid coupe, with the best reports so far claiming that the powertrain will be a 6.2-liter LT2 V8 with 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque at least one will consist of an electric motor on the front axle.
