On Tuesday, Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen became the second 7-footer in NBA history to hit at least nine 3-footers in a single game in a 126-111 win over the Detroit Pistons.
Markkanen joins Channing Frye who had nine 3-pointers in the Phoenix Suns’ 135-127 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 11, 2011. Of course, Frye finished this matchup with 33 points on 6-of-17 (35.3%) shots from the floor and 9-of-14 (64.3%) from deep.
Based on a number of NBA betting sites, the Jazz have the ninth lowest odds of winning the championship in 2023. Quite a few sports betting providers do not expect a playoff stake this season.

Lauri Markkanen finished with 38 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal in Utah’s win over the Pistons. He shot 13 of 20 (65%) off the floor and 9 of 13 (69.2%) over the arc. Needless to say, his nine 3-pointers is a career high for a single game.
“Obviously Lauri made a great game for us,” said jazz coach Will Hardy. “He really gave us the lead.” Utah’s best lead of the game was 22 points.

In 2018, Markkanen equaled Dirk Nowitzki’s record of eight 3-pointers in a single game by a 7-footer. Basketball statisticians tend to forget Frye’s performance in 2011.
Despite being a decent player, Frye loses the popularity contest when paired with the future Hall of Famer. It may explain why some records are forgotten. Either way, both records are insane. Lauri Markkanen is on his way to his first All-Star selection.

Markkanen’s performance on Monday was one of the best of his NBA career. On November 18, in the Jazz’s 134-133 win over the Suns, the 25-year-old finished with 38 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal in 35 minutes. He finished 15 of 18 (83.3%) from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers.
In 31 starts this season, the forward averages career bests of 22.8 points and 2.1 assists. In addition to 8.2 boards per game, Lauri Markkanen also shoots 53.4% from the field and 43.8% off the arc. Both percentages are career highs. And the wing has also recorded 11 double-doubles.
