If you’re a donut slinger, a robot could shoot at your job. The CEO of Krispy Kreme revealed in an interview with Yahoo Finance earlier this week that the company plans to add robots to its workforce starting next year to meet the company’s demand while reducing production times.
“So within the next 18 months, you’re probably going to see some automation seeping into the frosting, the filling, the sprinkles, even the packaging,” CEO Michael J. Tattersfield told Yahoo Finance reporter Brooke Dipalma. He continued, “We have some pretty big factory stores that have 12,000 access points today that get fresh donuts around the world. You have to think about what the automation capacity is because it goes to the grocers, it goes to the convenience stores. So you will see that next year starts.”
Gizmodo reached out to Krispy Kreme to clarify whether these robots will only be rolled out in the company’s factories or if customers might see them in stores, but the company didn’t immediately respond to our request for comment.
Nation’s Restaurant News reported that Krispy Kreme COO and interim CFO Josh Charlesworth said during the company’s Investor Day that there is potential to add robots to both factories and storefronts in the next few years. Charlesworth went on to explain that Krispy Kreme was testing an automation that could fill donuts, remove those filled donuts from the production line, and place them in a box. The company reportedly aims to have 18% of its donuts automated.
The fast-food world is getting a robotic facelift, and Krispy Kreme is one of many stores focused on automation and other tech upgrades. Taco Bell launched a mobile order-only takeout restaurant concept earlier this summer that would ship your food in a tube to your car. Subway also introduced a smart AI fridge full of pre-made sandwiches.
