James Maddison has scored twice in his last two games for Leicester
Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers says he will ‘not ask a player to stay’ as James Maddison’s new contract talks continue.
Rodgers said there had been no development in the current discussions but stressed Maddison remains fully focused on doing his best for the club.
“It’s a conversation we’ve had with James’ reps for a while, so that’s not going to change,” he said.
“For me it’s about making sure James is playing at the best possible level despite the circumstances.
“Luckily he’s an experienced player now, he’s very focused on doing his best for us and staying available and fit.
“He’s a top player in the league and he’s shown that in his time here you can start to see a development taking place from the position he’s in now.
“I think that’s the kind of club we are – we’ll develop players, we’ll improve players, we can give them great conditions to work in – but I’m not going to beg for a player to stay. “
Maddison has had an impressive season, with form in the first half of the season earning him a spot in England’s World Cup squad.
A knee injury meant he did not feature in Qatar, but he has continued from where he left off since quitting after an injury scored twice in his last two games, taking his tally to nine for the season.
Rodgers hopes Maddison can continue his form when Leicester take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Foxes go into this game looking to extend their winning streak to four games in all competitions and Rodgers added, “That’s it [Old Trafford] a great place to go and play.
“You know you have to be strong to get a result, you have to defend well, be aggressive and it’s a great big field to play football.
“Once we’ve done the dirty work, we want to show our qualities going forward and try to be aggressive in the game.”
