Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces have used live fire and bird shots against protesters, but many seriously injured are avoiding hospitals amid reports of people being arrested in emergency rooms.
Volunteers with little or no medical training try to treat people at home. There are no reliable figures on how many people have sustained life-changing injuries or died as a result.
The BBC spoke to two Iranians who were seriously injured and were able to flee their towns to seek treatment in Iraqi Kurdistan.
One of them, a veterinarian, was shot while trying to treat other protesters.
