Brazilian Thiago Monteiro reached the second round at a tour-level event for the first time this season on Monday as he finished 6-1, 3-6, 7-7 at the former Rio Open, presented by Claro champion Dominic Thiem. 6 (2) passed ATP 500 event.

In a hard-fought duel, the home favorites sped off the blocks and won the opening five games before sealing the set on serve to progress. With former world No. 3 Thiem level, Monteiro kept his nerve in set number three, saving all four break points he faced to advance in their first ATP Head2Head meeting at two hours and 46 minutes.

“It was a tough start to the year, but at the same time I have the feeling that I played at a high level,” said Monteiro. “I try to push harder and harder. I’ve had some tough losses, some close games. Now it’s very important to win my first match in such a big tournament.

“In the tie-break I thought I played very solidly and I’m really happy about my first win.”

The 28-year-old, currently No. 80 in the Pepperstone ATP Live rankings, is making his seventh appearance at the clay court tournament in Brazil, his best result being a quarter-final run in 2017. Monteiro will try to reach that stage again if he meets second seed Cameron Norrie or Argentine lucky loser Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round.

In another action, Pedro Martinez ended a four-game losing streak when he defeated Chile’s Cristian Garin 7-6(0), 6-4 in two hours and 27 minutes. The Spaniard next meets third-placed Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti or Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry.

Slovakia’s Alex Molcan defeated Brazilian wildcard Joao Fonseca 6-0, 6-3 and meets Hugo Dellien next after the Bolivian defeated Joao Sousa 6-0, 6-2. Dellien got through qualifying and reached the semi-finals in Cordoba earlier this month.
