Red Bull: RB19

World champions Red Bull were the first team to do a full launch…although with their usual livery and a car that looked incredibly similar to last year’s, they gave little away.

The team gave the car a good shake up at Silverstone so don’t be surprised if you see a very different car testing.

Ferrari: SF-23

Ferrari delighted fans from its Maranello base with a performance and the pleasure of seeing the car in action.

The red and black SF-23 looks fierce and Ferrari, who turned their attention to this challenger fairly early last season, says it’s a “completely redesigned” machine. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both drove the car at the nearby Fiorano circuit without issue on launch day.

The pink livery will be used for the first three races in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia before returning to the predominantly blue look from there. Alpine, like many teams, say this car is an evolution of last year’s when they finished impressively fourth. Now they want to close the gap to the top three.

Why are so many cars black?

As you can see, many cars this year are more black than usual. This isn’t just for aesthetics, as the black look actually has a performance benefit – and in many cases prevents teams from exceeding F1’s weight limit.

The performance advantage comes because those who use black do so with a lot of exposed carbon fiber, meaning no extra color or weight is added to the car. A lighter car is of course a faster car.

Mercedes acknowledged this weight-saving exercise when they said the return to black livery – which they used in 2020 and 2021 as a mark against racism – still reflects those values, but has also been brought back “in the name of performance”.

“Last year we were overweight,” said Wolff. “This year we’ve been trying to figure out where to squeeze every single gram out of it,”

He also said Mercedes was at the “weight limit of what we wanted to achieve”.

“Ultimately, weight is an important goal for us,” added Hamilton. “We were overweight all year last year and as a result we had a weight penalty even in the last race. So that was a strong focus to make sure that’s not the case this year.

“I’m glad it’s being taken seriously. We see a lot of carbon, not too much paint on the car. That’s the bare minimum, and that’s a positive for me because it means performance matters.”
