The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are among the most-anticipated foldable flagships of 2023, and they won’t launch until later in the summer. Price & Availability

Samsung often announces its new foldable smartphones in August. Recent leaks and rumors suggest that Samsung could launch the new foldable flagships earlier to boost sales. Samsung’s semiconductor business saw sluggish sales that impacted the company’s profit margin.

The earlier release could help Samsung maintain its profits and suffer fewer losses over the long term, and it could also help the company gain an even bigger lead on Apple’s iPhones, which are usually unveiled in mid-September.

When it comes to pricing, you’re just as good at guessing as we are. The previous generation, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, sold for $1,800 in the US, and we expect the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to be the same or a similar price in 2023. Due to the current economic downturn, Samsung might adjust and raise it slightly, but we don’t expect any drastic price hikes from the company.

Galaxy Z Fold 5: Specifications

As for the specs, we expect the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset or an even newer Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 SoC. Be that as it may, both chips offer the latest and greatest and are the best chips currently available on the market with excellent efficiency and performance scores.

We’re also expecting 12GB of RAM and 256/512GB and 1TB storage tiers. Storage could get an upgrade from UFS 3.1 to UFS 4.0, as seen on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it’s too early to tell if those predictions are accurate.

Note: Most specs are based on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 until we get more leaks.

design

The Galaxy Fold 5 will look almost exactly like last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, and the phone will reportedly have almost similar dimensions. The Fold 5 measures 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.5 mm when folded and 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.3 mm when unfolded. There are also rumors that Samsung could use a waterdrop-shaped hinge design that will finally allow the device to close completely, thus eliminating the need for a gap in the center of the folded device.

Aside from the new hinge mechanism, the Fold 5 is said to have the same displays and camera island on the back, which features three sensors. The fingerprint sensor, power button, and volume rocker remain on the right side of the device, and the flagship 2023 will almost certainly see the return of the stereo speaker setup.

Unfortunately, the Fold 5 won’t have its own S Pen slot; As such, we’re likely to see a similar first-party case from Samsung accompanying the flagship with the stylus. The new flagship also retains its IPX8 water resistance certificate and is water resistant.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 will reportedly feature the same 6.2-inch cover display and 7.6-inch main screen inside and out, suggesting that Samsung will keep the aspect ratio without sacrificing width increase. The news could be disappointing for those who wished for a wider and shorter display for the 2023 flagship. Fortunately, there is good news.

Even though the size could stay the same this year, there are rumors that Samsung will use a new waterdrop-shaped hinge mechanism that could make the wrinkle-free feel noticeable. The new hinge wouldn’t eliminate the crease or make it less noticeable, but it could also help make the device slimmer and finally more gapless. Samsung has always had a big gap in its Fold series, and the Fold 5 could be the first in the series to fully close, making it less prone to scratches and accidental damage from objects getting between the screen.

camera

The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 is rumored to be getting an upgrade in the camera department, and new leaks suggest the foldable device could get the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 108-megapixel main camera – which isn’t as good as the 200 -Megapixel sensor of the latest Galaxy S23 Ultra. Still, we’re expecting some changes on the camera side and would like to see the sensors improved to offer an even better flagship experience.

Yogesh Brar before claims that Samsung would equip the Fold 5 with a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor, exactly the same setup already present on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. It would be disappointing to see the same camera array on the latest foldable device. But as always, we recommend you take this with a pinch of salt.

battery

LI quick charge battery

We don’t have much information on the battery capacity of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Previous reports have claimed that Samsung could keep the same 4,400mAh cell for the Fold 4, and since the device will reportedly have the same dimensions as its predecessor, this seems a likely outcome.

As far as charging technology goes, Samsung is expected to stick with the 25W slow charging standard once again. The phone supports wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 wish list: Everything we want to see

Shorter and wider cover display: Like most users, we would like the cover display to be taller and wider for better usability. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 was a step in the right direction and we hope to see a foldable Galaxy Z Fold device with a handier and easier to use display. Faster charging: For many years we have accused Samsung of not improving its existing charging technology and refusing to introduce new and faster charging standards. The company is now way behind the competition and a 25W charging speed for a foldable device is considered slow these days, especially when even Google now supports 30W wired speeds on its own Pixel Fold device. Dedicated S Pen Slot: While the first-party accessory for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 makes it easier to carry the stylus with the Fold 4, it significantly elevates the device, making it less ergonomic and cumbersome to carry around. We’d appreciate a dedicated S Pen slot in the phone, making storing and using the stylus a breeze. A flagship-level camera experience: The Galaxy Z Fold 4 brought major improvements to the Galaxy Z Fold lineup, enhancing the camera experience. However, it still lags behind the flagship Galaxy S series in terms of overall quality. We’re hoping to see a new and vastly improved camera array on the Galaxy Fold 5.
