England: Lionesses hold government talks on equal opportunities in football for girls | football news

England’s players have continued their talks with the government to give girls equal access to play football in schools.

Leah Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Baroness Sue Campbell met Education Department officials and ministers earlier this month after talks with then Prime Minister Liz Truss in October, InNewCL Sports News can reveal.

Following their Euro success, the Lionesses wrote an open letter to the government urging them to ensure that girls have access to at least two hours of physical education each week and the guidance of female teachers in the subject.

The FA also released the latest figures on attendance and growth in women’s matches, which show that attendance in the 2022/23 Women’s Super League is up 227 per cent compared to last season.

Other numbers are:

348,000 fans have attended live WSL games so far this season. 5% increase in the number of female FA member clubs from June 2022 to December 2022. 15% increase in female youth teams in the last six months of the year. 21% increase in registered women referees at all levels574,875 fans attended Euros (more than double the 2017 tournament)23.3 million people watched Euros Final either on TV or online.
