Twitter received complaints from 100 former employees Tuesday, accusing the company of gender discrimination and unlawful terminations. The lawsuit was first filed earlier this month and concerns CEO Elon Musk’s decision to fire more than half of the company. The lawsuit alleges that women were primarily targeted for layoffs and accuses the company of failing to pay the promised severance pay.
Attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan has filed 100 arbitration lawsuits against Twitter on behalf of workers and has filed four class-action lawsuits against the company to date.
She has stated that she intends to pursue additional legal claims and said in a Twitter post, “Proud to represent these employees. This is just the first wave of arbitration claims – more to come. @Twitter’s behavior since it was acquired by @elonmusk is outrageous and we will use all means to protect workers and withdraw compensation from Twitter.”
in one separate tweetLiss-Riordan wrote that Musk stands ready to respond with the support of thousands of former Twitter employees if she decides to fight the arbitration.
The arbitration letters address gender discrimination, breach of contract and the wrongful termination of employees who were on sick leave or parental leave, and in some cases without 60 days notice as required by California law. The class action lawsuit states, among other things, “The mass firing of employees at Twitter has affected female employees to a much greater extent than male employees – and to a statistically highly significant extent.”
Twitter and Liss-Riordan did not immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment.
The lawsuits come after Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October and then laid off an estimated 3,700 employees last month as part of strict cost-cutting measures. Twitter has offered employees to accept a settlement that includes a month’s base salary if they don’t join the class action lawsuit, but a California judge ruled the former employees must be notified of the lawsuit before giving up their rights.
U.S. District Judge James Donato said last week that Twitter’s communications to former workers about their severance packages “should not be made misleading by omitting material information about a pending lawsuit,” adding that proper notification will be “the fairest.” and Efficient Administration” promote the litigation.
Liss-Riordan responded to Donato’s verdict on Twitter. Write“[Donato’s] Decision is a victory for Twitter workers who have been abused by Elon Musk for weeks.”
She continued, “The court’s decision that Twitter must notify employees of our legal action is a fundamental but important step that gives employees an opportunity to better understand their rights, rather than simply signing them off and receiving any money that may be owed.” sign , under pressure from Musk.”
