In early February, Cointelegraph began publishing its 2023 Top 100 list of the best heroes and worst villains expected to impact the crypto and blockchain space in the coming year. The list compiles the voices of Cointelegraph readers and contributors who decided which players had the biggest impact on the sector in 2022 and who is likely to have the biggest impact in 2023. The profiles were released in batches of 10, starting with #100.

Profiles 21–30 were released on February 17, with Sebastian Borget, co-founder and chief operating officer of The Sandbox, at number 30; Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal at #24; and United States Representative Tom Emmer at No. 23. Rankings 11-20 are the most recently published profiles.

Just outside the top 10 sits Gary Gensler, chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Gensler has extensive knowledge of cryptocurrencies and blockchain, having previously taught a class on the sector at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. With the view that most digital assets fall under the classification of securities, Gensler has arguably exercised a heavy hand in regulating the crypto sector in 2022.

Gensler landed 29th on Cointelegraph’s 2022 Top 100 pick, earning it a higher spot on the 2023 list. As noted above, another top 30 player, Emmer, criticized Gensler in 2022 for its approach to regulating the game crypto industry. Other names in the 11-20 stack include Joseph Lubin, CEO of ConsenSys, and Erik Voorhees, CEO of ShapeShift.

The Cointelegraph 2023 Top 100 was a publication journey that revealed profiles of people, concepts and companies. The list includes picks that have positively and negatively impacted the crypto space – heroes and villains.
