Disney+ Hotstar is suffering an outage for some users in India in the middle of a popular cricket match, putting customers at a time when the Disney crown jewel is already facing multiple setbacks in the South Asian market.
It’s unclear what led to the bug, which Hotstar acknowledged as “unforeseen technical issues” in its apps and web. Records from the domain registrar show that Hotstar renewed the Hotstar.com domain name on February 17th. If Disney temporarily lost ownership of the domain, it would take some time for the new change to become visible to all users.
DownDetector, a web reliability monitoring service, reported a sudden spike in the volume of complaints related to Hotstar on Friday. Numerous users on social media also reported that they were unable to use the app on their phones and desktops.
A Hotstar spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The outage comes amid the ongoing high-profile cricket tournament between India and Australia. Hotstar, one of the most popular video streaming services in India, recently lost streaming rights to the popular IPL cricket tournament, which analysts say could plunge its subscriber base in the country.
The company is also reportedly set to lose the rights to stream HBO shows in the country, according to Deadline.
