Lawmakers on Tuesday announced an agreement to provide nearly $50 billion in emergency aid to Ukraine in its fight against a Russian invasion, to provide another tranche of aid ahead of the start of a new Congress in January.
Efforts to help Ukraine have continued to garner broad support on Capitol Hill, and the latest aid package would push American investment in the war against Russia to more than $100 billion this year. Some officials have expressed concern that Republicans, eager to impose deep spending cuts when they take control of the House of Representatives in January, will be far more reluctant to continue pouring billions of dollars into the war effort abroad.
It’s part of a roughly $1.7 trillion spending package that the US government will hold open until September 2023, which is expected to go into effect before the end of the week. The package eclipses the $37.7 billion request made by the White House earlier this year, with New York Senator Chuck Schumer, the Majority Leader, hailing the opportunity to “deliver on our promise to our friends in Ukraine.” to stand by.”
According to a summary released by House Democrats, $9 billion would be allocated to support training, equipment, supplies and other resources for Ukraine’s military. It would also provide the country with more than $13 billion in economic aid and more than $11 billion to replenish American weapons already sent to Ukraine.
The package would also provide more than $2 billion to help out-of-country refugees find emergency housing, job training and English classes.
In their own separate accounting of the emergency aid package, Senate Republicans specifically noted that it would also set aside billions of dollars for inspectors general to audit how the money is being spent and require regular reports on what the money is being used for.
